You are going to learn and experience such a great history of carriages! I know, this sounds BORING on the proverbial paper, however, I promise you that it is NOT BORING. I learned much more about horse-drawn vehicles than I intended to, and above all, it was a happy surprise.

THE LONG ISLAND MUSEUM VISIT
“The extraordinary collection of horse-drawn vehicles at The Long Island Museum was begun by Ward Melville, a man fascinated by the past and committed to public education. He began in the early 1940s to collect the works of Stony Brook’s nineteenth-century artist William Sydney Mount; by the mid-1940s, he was collecting carriages. Mr. Melville’s interest in collecting paintings and artifacts related to America’s past was part of a trend of interest in American history and artifacts that began in the late nineteenth century and
developed rapidly in the twentieth century. Mr. Melville collected Mount’s paintings and drawings, as well as objects that had belonged to Mount and his family. Assisting Mr. Melville in his art collecting was Richard McCandless Gipson, whose connoisseurship and talent for patient negotiation significantly contributed to the development of Mr. Melville’s superb collection.”

There is a fantastic Art Museum on the campus as well: Two galleries feature changing exhibitions on American art and history. Amazing cultural things to do on Long Island when exploring!
This is such a neat day trip if you’re looking for things to do on Long Island. Fun Fact: not many people are outside right now! Therefore, it feels like you will have the place all to yourself, which is nice! Also note, it’s inexpensive to visit and there is always a deal on Groupon!
