HIKING | SANS SOUCI COUNTY PARK

“Sans Souci” is French for “without worry,” and pursuant to Suffolk County Parks, at Sans Souci Nature Preserve you will be able escape the stressors of daily life by walking through this serene park filled with plant and wildlife. Sans Souci County Park has an expansive forest with lily pad-filled lakes and a labyrinth of trails that are popular with dog parents.

The Sans Souci lakes were one continuous lake until the mid-1800’s when small dams were built to turn the land into a cranberry farm. Today you can enjoy these beautiful lakes undisturbed.

Sans Souci County Park

“This 316-acre nature preserve is teeming with plants and animals. As you are hiking through the nature preserve, trail markers will inform you on all aspects of the preserve from plants to pollution, and water levels to fire damage.”

San Souci’s entrance is on the east side of Broadway Avenue, which is south of Sunrise Highway (NY Route 27).  The parking lot is a decent size for about 10 cars with a trail map. Remember to snap a picture of the map so you can reference it during your hike! It is super easy to lose track and a sense of direction once you are on the park’s maze-like trails. Note, there are three marked trails: Yellow, White, and Orange.

The Yellow trail gives access to a path that leads to the 1.4-mile White trail, which is a loop through the park’s northernmost section. The white loop also leads to the one mile Orange trail, which is a loop through the park’s southern section just west of the of lakes. On the opposite side of the lakes sits Camp Edey, which is a 95-acre property operated by the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County.

Firstly, you can begin to hike if you feel so inclined; I am a newbie hiker (still in my first year!). However, if you need help getting started, read this! Secondly, I love this new habit formed and structure; with that said, my hikes are generally under the guidance of AllTrails:

Lover’s Lane Loop is a 1.1 mile lightly trafficked loop trail and San Souci Extended Loop is a 1.7 mile moderately trafficked loop trail (both) located near Sayville, New York that offers the chance to see wildlife. The trails are good for all skill levels and is primarily used for hiking and trail running. The trails offer several activity options. Dogs are also able to use these trails but must be kept on leash.

Finally, just get out there and enjoy nature!

Sans Souci County Park is worth the hike! If you live in or around the vicinity, then you should make it a point to visit. The nature park is absolutely serene, quiet and without worry as the name suggests. It is a nice sense to feel like the park is all to yourself – and since I am always being honest, I love that. Perfect! The trails were easy to follow and getting a little ‘lost’ is enjoyable at times. I went on a stunning fall day and it was delightful.
