TRAVEL THINGS TO DO ON LONG ISLAND | THE WALT WHITMAN MUSEUM
Ever heard of The Walt Whitman Museum aka Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site? Long Island, NY has tons of well-known seemingly hidden history. I think it is fun to explore the history of where you live. Even if you do not live on Long Island and decide to take a visit, you should make this a planned stop to the:
“The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center offers modern day visitors to Long Island the opportunity to step back in time and encounter the life and art of the most powerful poet in world literature, America’s own Walt Whitman. Moreover, the historic Birthplace stands peacefully on the same spot where it was built in West Hills, Huntington, on the North Shore of Long Island.”

“I tramp a perpetual journey.” ― Walt Whitman, Song of Myself
THE WALT WHITMAN MUSEUM MISSION:
“As Stewards of the Walt Whitman Birthplace, a New York State Historic Site, we preserve and promote the poet’s legacy with educational programs about his life and work, celebrating inclusivity and inspiring creativity.”
A little about Walt Whitman (May 31, 1819 – March 26, 1892):
“Walt Whitman was born, the second of nine children, in Huntington, Long Island, New York, on May 31, 1819. His ancestors and family had lived in the West Hills area of South Huntington for over 125 years. Walt Whitman’s Birthplace, a State Historic Site listed on the National Register of Historic Places, still stands and commemorates his nativity. The farmhouse was constructed by the poet’s father Walter Whitman Sr., a house builder, upon his marriage to Louisa Van Velsor in 1816.”
“There is no God any more divine than Yourself.” ― Walt Whitman
“Walt Whitman was an American poet, essayist, and journalist. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse. His work was controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sensuality. Whitman’s own life came under scrutiny for his presumed homosexuality.”
“If you see a good deal remarkable in me I see just as much remarkable in you.” ― Walt Whitman
Firstly, as part of my mission to explore the planet I live on, traversing museums always opens up the world and this was a pleasant day well spent! Secondly, it was interesting to step back in time and see what life was like for Walt Whitman as well as encounter 350 artifact furnishings typical in a “day in the life” of a 19th century Long Island family in 1821. Finally, what a time to get out and explore! You should get out there and make the best of your days because it’s worth it!
Furthermore, the Birthplace site consists of 1.5 landscaped acres and was designated a New York State Historic Site in 1957. Since 1985, the property has been listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. In 1999, it was named an American Treasure. Additionally, the site is operated by the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association in partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
