TRAVEL THINGS | SOUTHOLD INDIAN MUSEUM

Learning about the story of Long Island’s first people is a must: Southold Indian Museum is a great place to start. However, this was absolutely new to me (and probably new to you) but it should be more obvious! The Long Island Chapter of the New York State Archaeological Association houses an extensive collection of Native American artifacts and specializes in Long Island Algonquian material culture. Therefore, you should also make some time to visit Southold Indian Museum, 1080 Main Bayview Rd., Southold, NY 11971.

“The Museum has the largest collection of Algonquin ceramic pottery that exists as well as an impressive collection of earlier pots and bowls carved out of soapstone. The projectile points on display include a large quantity of spear heads and arrowheads shaped for hunting many different animals, birds, and fish. Worthy of special note are the displays of knife blades, hoe blades, hammers, gouges, drills and other tools.”
