TRAVEL THINGS TO DO ON LONG ISLAND | THE NATHANIEL CONKLIN HOUSE

A cute and quaint historical house that still stands today. If you want a nice and calm mini adventure, then visit this old town and old house: The Nathaniel Conklin House, 280 Deer Park Ave., Babylon, NY 11702. In 1989, The Conklin House was in danger of being torn down. A group of concerned citizens, together with the Village of Babylon, saved the house and it is now owned by the Village of Babylon.

Firstly, as part of my mission to explore the planet I live on, traversing historical sites always opens up the world and this mini adventure is the calm that I sometimes need. Secondly, every adventure does not need to be extravagant and even the small tucked away ones offer interesting historical facts. Finally, I truly enjoy learning about all types of history.

Conklin House History

“In its early history, Babylon was a farm community of sorts. Originally known as Sampawams, the native inhabitants.  Huntington farmers drove their ox-drawn wagons down the Sampawams Neck to harvest salt hay to feed their livestock.  But they were only visitors and as such many needed to stay over after the long journey. They were able to find lodging in the various taverns and inns that had sprung up along the south shore. The permanent settlers, particularly thos ‘of means’ were industrialists attracted by the abundant water power from the streams and lakes in the area…Nathaniel Conklin played a principal role in the early development of Babylon Village. He was one of the largest landowners, perhaps the largest. One of the early industrialists, he owned and operated a successful tannery.”

Visit The Conklin House’s website to learn more about The House, The Gardens, The Barn, its history, events, and the Village of Babylon. The Conklin House offers guided historical tours and school field trips and is made available to community organizations for cultural, historical, or educational events.
