TRAVEL THINGS | SUFFOLK COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM

Ever heard of The Suffolk County Historical Society Museum? Who knew that Long Island, specifically Suffolk County, housed its own museum with historical facts pertaining to itself?! The Suffolk County Historical Society Museum was founded in 1886, however, I feel like I have discovered something new! In 1994 the United States Department of the Interior listed the society’s building on the National Register of Historic Places. I recommend making time to visit The Suffolk County Historical Society Museum, 300 West Main Street, Riverhead, NY 11901.

SUFFOLK COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM’s MISSION:

“Since its founding, the purpose of the Suffolk County Historical Society has remained essentially the same: to collect, preserve and interpret the ongoing history of Suffolk County and its people. To fulfill these purposes the society operates a history museum, a library and archives, and offers educational programs and events. The society houses a unique, ever-growing collection of artifacts, reflecting more than three centuries of history.”

“Today, over 20,000 historical artifacts are cared for in the museum. Permanent and changing exhibitions are used to interpret important themes in Suffolk County history. The artifact collections are broad in nature and are particularly strong in the areas of General History, Decorative Arts, Fine and Folk Arts, Costumes and Textiles, and Ethnographic and Natural History artifacts.”

Firstly, as part of my mission to explore the planet I live on, traversing museums always opens up the world and this was a very pleasant visit. Secondly, there is plenty to see and learn – the “WHAT THE #*!! IS THAT?: Ordinary Objects From Yesteryear That Are Mysteries to the Modern Eye” exhibit was actively entertaining because it was interactive. You are able to use your cellphone to scan bar codes to find out exactly what each item was. Furthermore, my favorite exhibit was the “Long Island in Conflict” which showcased war artifacts such as guns, ammo, and uniforms.

Finally, there are different exhibits depending on the time of year you visit; so check their calendar to see what will be on display and pick your fancy! Also note, it’s inexpensive to visit and there is always a deal on Groupon!

Are you going to visit? Let me know!

Happy Travels! 🖤

I really enjoyed your perspective on this Suffolk museum. I havent heard of it until now. Albeit there’s nothing like experiencing it for myself, you definitely brought this museum to life for me through your writing and beautiful pictures. Thank you!
